Achille Mbembe, from the University of the Witwatersrand, defined the role of universities in this sustainable partnership:

"The task of the university today is no longer to make a profession of truth [...], but also to foster more than ever the emergence of a new planetary consciousness."

In the continuity of this reflection, Peter Maassen of the University of Oslo to address the partner universities the need to replace unilateral projects with a multilateral partnership.

The public conference took place in two parts: A round table was first organized around the following issue: "Exploring common ground : How can European university alliances serve African and European partners ? address global challenges jointly with African partners?"
